Girdwood Fire & Rescue New Member Intake – Fall 2026

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to give back, consider joining Girdwood Fire and Rescue. As a member, you’ll receive top-tier training, gain valuable emergency response skills, and become part of a dedicated team committed to protecting the community. We welcome new members twice a year, in the fall and spring. Applications are accepted on set dates per intake, so be sure to check back here or on our Facebook Page for upcoming recruitment periods.

Applicants must be prepared to fully commit to the Probationary Training Academy, which includes six full days of training from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM each day. If you’re ready to take on the challenge, we encourage you to apply!

Minimum Expectations and Qualifications

To be considered for membership, applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Maintain residence within the Municipality of Anchorage.
  • Maintain a valid Alaska driver’s license.
  • Maintain a working phone or cell phone.
  • Maintain a working email address.
  • Submit a State of Alaska Background Investigation (dated within 30 days of the first hire date) with the application packet (at the applicant’s expense).
  • Submit a driving record check (no older than 30 days from submission of the application) with the application packet.
  • Meet the Municipality of Anchorage Driving Conviction Guidelines (see the last sheet of the application packet).
  • Commit to 48 hours per month of shift coverage (can be broken down into 6-hour shifts).
  • Attend at least 50% of Tuesday Night Training at the fire station.
  • Follow all safety procedures in the workplace.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to individuals who:

  • Have a current Alaska EMT-1 or higher certification.
  • Hold current structural firefighting certifications.
  • Are full-time residents of Girdwood.

Selection Process

Applicants will undergo:

  • An oral board interview
  • A written test
  • A Chief’s interview

After selections are made, successful candidates will be invited to attend our academy. Attendance at the Probationary Training Academy is mandatory for all new members.

Training and Commitment

Our members undergo extensive training to ensure they are well-prepared for the demands of fire, rescue, and emergency medical services. Training opportunities include:

  • Three levels of EMT certification
  • Two levels of firefighter certification
  • Additional specialized certifications
  • Regular ongoing training to maintain skills and stay up to date with industry standards

Recruitment FAQs

Can members be just Firefighters or just EMS providers?

Members may specialize in one or the other but will be required to learn basic fire and EMS skills. You will have to respond to both Fire and EMS calls.

Do I need prior EMS or Fire experience?

No, but preference will be given to those individuals with Advanced EMS and Fire certifications.

What time commitment is needed to be a member?

A 1-year commitment is required (2 years preferred):

  • Training begins with an academy held over three weekends.
  • A 6-month probationary period follows, during which you must complete required training and skill demonstrations to achieve full membership.

Members must commit to:

  • A minimum of 48 hours per month of on-call shifts.
  • Tuesday night training sessions at the station.
  • Meeting additional training requirements (most training resources are provided at the station).

Will I be allowed to have facial hair?

All facial hair must be kept out of SCBA mask sealing area. This is focused on jaw line. Mustaches and some other styles may be excepted.
