Reduce Wildfire Risk with a Firewise Assessment
Girdwood is located in an area at risk for wildfires, and it’s important for homeowners to take steps to reduce their property’s vulnerability. The Firewise Home Assessment program, offered by the Anchorage Fire Department (AFD), provides free assessments to eligible properties to help homeowners make their homes safer from wildfires.
A Firewise assessment evaluates your property’s risk and offers practical steps to reduce potential fire hazards. This can include:
- Clearing defensible space around your home
- Managing vegetation
- Using fire-resistant materials for landscaping and building
Is Your Property Eligible?
Firewise assessments are available to homeowners in areas at risk for wildfires. To be eligible for a free assessment, your property should be located in or near the wildland-urban interface – areas where forested or wild areas meet residential properties.

The AFD Firewise Program offers free property assessments from April through October each year, on a first-come, first-served basis and only as weather and crew availability permit.
